Rembelszczyzna
Rembelszczyzna is a village on ul. Strużańska by the Żerań Canal. A map of its land from 1793 has survived, and a plan from the early 19th century shows a “new Rembelszczyzna” with houses arranged in two even rows. This may mean that the older settlement was moved at that time to the area of today’s ul. Strużańska.
The most interesting spot is a hill known as Celegraf. In the 19th century it was the site of an optical telegraph station on the Warsaw – St Petersburg line, which relayed messages using movable semaphores mounted on a chain of towers. The tower itself has not survived, but the old name of the hill lives on among local residents.
Near the present bridge over the Żerań Canal, the stone abutments of a bridge over the New Canal, destroyed during the fighting in 1944, have survived. The history of the area is complemented by seven archaeological sites with traces of settlement from the Stone Age to antiquity.
