Michałów-Grabina: Lutheran Cemetery
The Lutheran (Evangelical) cemetery in Michałów-Grabina is located at ul. Kwiatowa 20a, on a rise on the east side of the road to Józefów. It was established in the 19th century for the residents of the Michałów and Szamocin colonies and was entered in the regional register of historic monuments in 1995.
German settlers once made up a large part of the local community. In 1921 Michałów had 88 Protestants and 11 Catholics. More than 20 sandstone and concrete gravestones have survived in the cemetery, some with inscriptions in Polish and German, as well as mass graves.
In 2015 the site was cleared by members of the Nieporęt Historical Society, local residents and scouts. Thanks to their work, the layout of the cemetery – a reminder of the multicultural history of Michałów-Grabina – can be read once again.
