Execution Site of Home Army 3rd Battalion Soldiers
On 19 August 1944, the Germans arrested soldiers of the 3rd Battalion of the Home Army (AK) in Nieporęt. After interrogation, some of them were taken into the forest and shot. One of those arrested was killed while trying to escape.
The victims included seventeen-year-olds Andrzej Marek Popp and Mieczysław Kozak, nineteen-year-old Adam Grocholski and twenty-two-year-old Tadeusz Grocholski. After the execution their bodies were found and in 1945 moved to the parish cemetery in Nieporęt.
The site of the tragedy is marked by a cross with the inscription: “Here Home Army soldiers died at the hands of the Nazi fascists in 1944.” The memorial was moved during work on the construction of a gas pipeline.
