The stone memorial on Plac Wolności in Nieporęt commemorates the soldiers of the 3rd Battalion of the Home Army (AK) and the residents of the municipality who were killed or went missing during the Second World War.

One of the battalion’s commanders was reserve Lieutenant Bronisław Tokaj, codename “Bogdan”, the head teacher of the local school. Its structure included platoons from Wieliszew, Skrzeszew and Kałuszyn, among others. The soldiers carried out reconnaissance, maintained communications, prepared sabotage operations, gathered weapons and ammunition, and secured supply drops.

In August 1944, units of the 3rd Battalion fought in the Nieporęt forests. The memorial on Plac Wolności complements the commemoration in the porch of the Nieporęt parish church. Both places recall the underground activity and sacrifice of the region’s residents.
