Ziemowit Tugboat
The “Ziemowit” tugboat is a more than century-old piece of technical heritage moored at Pilawa Marina. It was built in 1907 at the Werft Übigau shipyard near Dresden. As a stern-wheel tug, it sailed on Polish waterways, including in the service of the State Water Authority in Toruń.
At the end of 1944 the vessel sank near Włocławek. It was raised from the bed of the Vistula in 1946 and, after repairs, given the name “Ziemowit”. In 1957 it was handed over to the Yacht Klub Polski in Warsaw and converted into a hulk – a stationary vessel serving as a landing stage and clubhouse. In 1958 the club’s ensign was raised on board.
At the end of the 1960s, “Ziemowit” came to the Zegrze Reservoir and moored in Nieporęt harbour, where it served sailors. Today it no longer tows barges, but it is a reminder of the history of inland navigation and sailing in Masovia.
