Wólka Radzymińska: Monument to the Kaniów Riflemen
The obelisk commemorates the soldiers of the 28th Kaniów Rifles Regiment who fell on 15 August 1920 in the fighting near Radzymin. At dawn, the regiment’s 1st Battalion, commanded by Lieutenant Stefan Pogonowski, took the Soviet units by surprise and pinned down the enemy forces. The attack hampered the Bolsheviks’ attempt to outflank Warsaw from the north and became an important episode of the Battle of Warsaw.
Lieutenant Pogonowski, Second Lieutenant Benedykt Pęczkowski and 18 privates were killed in the fighting. Their names are inscribed on the obelisk. The monument was unveiled in September 1924 in the presence of President Stanisław Wojciechowski and Prime Minister Władysław Grabski. It was funded by the Officer Corps of the 28th Kaniów Rifles Regiment.
Today the obelisk is a memorial site and an important point on the historical trail of the Battle of Warsaw.
