A boulder with a plaque in Zegrze Południowe commemorates the officers of the Polish Legions interned in Beniaminów in 1917. They included officers of the 5th Infantry Regiment who refused to swear allegiance to the German Emperor and obedience to foreign authorities.

After their refusal, the officers were held in the camp in Beniaminów, while the non-commissioned officers and privates were sent to Szczypiorno near Kalisz. Their stand became a symbol of loyalty to the cause of Polish independence.

The plaque reads: “To the unyielding soldiers of Józef Piłsudski, the officers of the Legions imprisoned in Beniaminów in 1917 for refusing to swear the oath to the Germans.”
