Białobrzegi: Monument to the Officers of the Polish Legions
The monument commemorates the officers of the Polish Legions interned in 1917 in the barracks in Beniaminów, in what is now Białobrzegi. It is a replica of the monument unveiled in 1931. It was recreated and unveiled again in 2004 thanks to the efforts of local residents and the municipal authorities.
In the summer of 1917, the Central Powers demanded that the legionnaires swear allegiance to the German Emperor and brotherhood in arms with the German and Austro-Hungarian armies. Many soldiers refused, considering the oath incompatible with their service to Poland. As part of the so-called Oath Crisis, 147 officers had been interned in Beniaminów by mid-August, while the rank and file were sent to Szczypiorno.
Additional plaques were unveiled in 2008 at the entrance to the former barracks and on the building where the internees were held.
